Your 100-Seconds Life

Imagine your life as a short 100-seconds video. In the first 20 seconds or so, life is fuss free. It is also fun and exciting as you get to learn and try a breadth of unique experiences. Then comes the next 60 seconds, where it is jam packed with responsibilities such as career, parenting and wealth creation. Before you know it, you’re into the last 20 seconds of the video. Ideally, it’s a beautiful scene where you go riding off into the setting sun, all happy and satisfied with your journey in life.

Unfortunately, it’s a scenario that very few will get to actually experience. It’s not impossible, but it is not easy to come by. The key lies in the habits and actions we take early on in our lives. Because every decision you make, there is cascading effects affecting those around you. These consequences compound and can lead to unpredictable outcomes (both good and bad) over the years.

Citing common observations: Many sacrifice their health throughout majority of their lives in the pursuit of wealth. Some chase after material possessions at the expense of huge financial debt, while some climb the corporate ladder with laser focus, neglecting their social networks and family responsibilities. At the later years, they find themselves lonely, and ironically poorer due to the costly medical bills and treatments required to maintain their health. We are directors of our own lives, and we have the power and authority to decide how each second of our lifetime is spent.

It is often said that you should learn from the flaws of others, instead of making the mistake yourself.  I think it is timely to remind myself to be aware of the common pitfalls in life, in the attempt to make more conscious decisions to lead life on my terms and according to my values. And I believe that by sharing this personal reminder, you can also benefit by reflecting on your decisions and habits in life thus far. Remember, you get to influence and determine every second of your 100-second life. Make each second count!
